Russia and NATO: theses of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy

Article Abstract:

The relationship of Russia and NATO is being endangered by NATO's plan to include some countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) as members. The plan, which can benefit both the NATO and the prospective members from the CEE, is considered by Russia as detrimental to its interests. While the importance of NATO in the security of democratic states is recognized by Russia, NATO's enlargement could result in the military and political isolation of Russia and trigger its anti-western sentiments.

The expansion of NATO and the future of the CFE treaty

Article Abstract:

Russia believes that the Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) treaty should build a material foundation, with the participation of Russia, to maintain conventional arms equilibrium in Europe and to serve as a competent security system in Europe. Western countries' attempt to expand NATO to Eastern Europe may affect the CFE treaty's power and military balance in Europe. A new arms control treaty must come into existence if the CFE is scraped.

Sifting through the relics of confrontation

Article Abstract:

Russia and the West should adopt confidence building measures to remove existing mistrust between the sides and to share important information regarding international conflicts. West should include Russia in all its discussions on international issues at the preliminary stages itself. Alienation of Russia from West's decisions will affect the political atmosphere in Russia.
