The balance of power: formal perfection and practical flaws

Article Abstract:

This article uses a game-theory model to analyze the balance of power mechanism, which occurs when the threat of one country against another is countered by a third country and provides a bulwark against the redistribution of resources in the international system. The author explores the effectiveness of this mechanism, focusing on instances when it fails, asserting that the mechanism is very powerful and can prevent the distribution of resources among great powers and protect even non-members of winning coalitions from losing resources.
