The sharp edges of Europe: extending Schengen eastwards

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the political relationships a growing European Union (EU) has with neighbors that are less economically developed than the EU are examined. Topics include the internal security policies of the Schengen Convention, border policies that may complicate good neighbor relations, the EU's favoring of rich nations over poor ones, and the security issues raised by political relationships with countries neighboring Europe but outside of the EU.

Issues related to the relationship between Europe and Russia in the post-Cold War era are examined. Topics include Russias initial attempt to politically align itself with Europe, political distance created by Russia's internal struggles and NATO's policies in the Balkans, and signs of Pres Vladimir Putin's pro-Western policies.

Are the United States and Europe heading for divorce?

Article Abstract:

The relationship between Europe and the US since 1950 has produced a more united, peaceful, and democratic Europe than has ever previously existed. However, it is also clear relations between the US and Europe are strained and are likely to continue to remain so for some time.
