A league of their own; Women's Commission creates group to turn concerns into action

Article Abstract:

The Margaret Brent League was created in April 1996 by a vote of the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession. The league has tripartite goals, to be a place for lawyers to identify with and participate in the work of the commission, to establish outreach to the grassroots on commission work and to facilitate participation and leadership opportunities in the ABA for women. The commission wanted a way of having large numbers of participants work towards effecting change.

An ABA midyear meeting 1996 meeting on death penalty representation dealt with the difficulty state defendants have in obtaining habeas corpus relief in federal court and the loss of funding of death penalty resource centers across the country. Lawman plays the blues; from clubs to courtrooms, in music and in words

Article Abstract:

Charleston, WV, attorney Joshua Barrett specializes in blues guitar in his off-time, appearing at local clubs with his band, Blues du Jour. Barrett, a partner with DiTrapano & Jackson, receives encouragement from legal mentor Rudolph DiTrapano, despite the trial lawyer's professed hatred of rock music. Barrett feels guitar gives him a creative outlet and that improvisation is similar to the interplay between opposing attorneys.
