A worthy successor he is not

Article Abstract:

Edward Carnes has been approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee to replace Judge Frank M. Johnson on the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals. Judge Johnson had substantial trial experience before becoming a judge, while Carnes' experience is confined to capital punishment issues. Johnson was of crucial importance in pro-civil rights rulings during the 1960s. Carnes is head of the death penalty litigation unit in Alabama and in that capacity has told an ABA committee that in his state death penalty defendants receive adequate counsel, while an Alabama Bar committee came to the opposite conclusion.
