An economic attack on illicit drugs

Article Abstract:

The drug business is, like any other business, driven by economic forces and a drug policy which fails to address this fact is bound to fail. A middle ground between strict law enforcement and drug legalization could work. Addicts would receive their drugs from the medical profession but at the same time be required to participate in a drug treatment program. This approach would take the profit motive out of drug-related crime.

Alternatives for the common good

Article Abstract:

Therapeutic jurisprudence aims for the compassionate treatment and rehabilitation of the mentally ill and drug addicts who commit crimes. Statistics reveal that alcohol and drugs play a part in 80% of incarcerations, so the treatment of these twin ills will decrease incarcerations. Merely imprisoning these defendants is prohibitively expensive, inhumane, and has little effect, for recidivism is guaranteed.

Protective custody; a ruling barring forced drug treatment for a pregnant woman may not end the legal dispute

Article Abstract:

The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled in State of Wisconsin ex rel. Angela M.W. v. Kruzicki that state law did not intend an unborn child to be covered by child custody laws and that the state thus lacked the authority to detain a pregnant drug addict for treatment. The state had contended that they were stopping child abuse with this detention.
