Analysing worker activity: a new approach to risk assessment?

Article Abstract:

An effective method of analyzing workers' activities, as mandated by the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 and their companion Approved Code of Practice, is the use of the predictive human error analysis (PHEA) model. The eight-step PHEA procedure classifies potential human error into types such as actions, retrieval, checking, selection, and information communication. This technique, available on software, is approximately ten times faster than observational methods in accurately predicting human error.

Controlling contractors

Article Abstract:

The UK's Lucas Industries has introduced procedures designed to protect their outside contractors from industrial accidents and risks. Lucas's integrated management approach is based on responses to a 10-topic questionnaire initially given to the contractors, which was followed up with subsequent safety training. As part of the Lucas program, contractors use a job form to evaluate potential hazards. The company wants to implement this contractor safety regime in all of its branches.
