Government gives a lukewarm response to controversial deregulatory proposals

Article Abstract:

The UK government's deregulation task force has recommended using insurance instead of regulation in maintaining health and safety standards, but the government itself appears unenthusiastic about the proposal. The task force has singled out a number of laws it considers to be worthless, including the young people's activity center licensing requirements, the employee consultation regulations, and the Construction Regulations 1994. The task force's goal is to simplify and reduce the number of health and safety laws.

HSE hands responsibilities to LAs

Article Abstract:

Proposed amendments to the UK's Health and Safety (Enforcing Authority) Regulations will facilitate allocation of enforcement responsibilities. The Health and Safety Executive and local authorities will swap and transfer a number of enforcement duties. Enforcement duties will be allocated on the basis of "main activity," rather than according to staffing or other criteria.
