Austria's affirmative action for women workers versus protective legislation for the "weaker sex": incongruous concepts?

Article Abstract:

Austrian legislation regarding women in the workplace presents conflicting concepts of protective treatment and affirmative action. The laws give Austrian women preferential treatment in employment decisions to foster equality, but also provide restrictions concerning working hours, pregnancy, and hazardous jobs. These give women workers a decided advantage over men who are not protected. Austria should determine which policy is more important, or perhaps follow the example of the U.S., where preferential programs and protections are voluntary and not required by law.

Employment issues involving gender: women's issues

Article Abstract:

Progress in the area of gender issues in employment has been made, but much remains to be done. More women are working in a greater number of areas than ever before, yet their wages remain stuck at the lower end of the pay scale. Sexual harassment remains a big problem for women. Although the family is accorded great value in American society, the Reagan and Bush administrations have not considered this institution important enough to establish minimum standards in the areas of child care, family leave and health insurance.
