Ax-grinding politics leads to unequal justice

Article Abstract:

The life imprisonment of Jonathan Pollard for passing classified information to Israel is by far the harshest ever given for a similar offense, and those guilty of worse crimes have gained their liberty. Shortly after Pollard was arrested, the government made a plea agreement seeking information in exchange for leniency. Once Pollard had fully cooperated, the government reneged on this agreement. The breach of this plea agreement was a fundamental miscarriage of justice.

Can foreign court pronounce on British justice?

Article Abstract:

The European Court of Human Rights will hear an appeal of the case of the two 15-year-old English boys convicted of murdering 2-year-old James Bulger in a crime which shocked the world, and the court was before this news unpopular among many Britons, considered arrogant and the source of much delay despite the good work it has done. To meet complaints about the delay, the court is streamlining its procedures as of Nov 1998. Streamlined procedures are listed.

Unequal justice for gays in hostile courtrooms

Article Abstract:

The judicial system continues to be a hostile environment for many gays. Judges often display blatant prejudice toward gay litigants. Judicial education has failed in this area, despite efforts by the ABA to prevent courtroom bias against gays and lesbians. Bar associations have documented anti-gay bias is widespread in the judicial system, but sexual orientation education must be improved to fight the problems.
