Handle with care: reducing strain in the NHS

Article Abstract:

Keith Baker of the UK's Northampton General Hospital Trust made manual handling operations a priority after his Sept 1993 appointment as health and safety director. His strategy is to train personnel in risk management and legal ramifications to lower the number of manual handling accidents. Training includes videos, printed material, and exercises, with new staff trained within three months of their start dates. Baker conducted a 1994 equipment audit prior to making a large budget request for new equipment such as hoists, rope ladders, lifting blocks, and adjustable beds and trolleys.

"A partnership of effort": reducing violence in schools

Article Abstract:

The personal safety of students and teachers at UK schools became an important issue following several violent incidents. Legislation and risk assessment procedures may be useful, as exemplified by the Dept of Education and Employment's school security guidelines. A school safety training pack produced by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust provided another approach to curbing violence. The teacher unions' and Health and Safety Executive's positions are also discussed.
