Bad daughter makes good lawyer

Article Abstract:

Julie Hilden is author of "The Bad Daughter," a memoir of her verbal abuse as a child by her alcoholic mother who suffered from early-onset Alzheimer's Disease. Hilden decided, as a first-year student at Yale Law School, to abandon her mother at her deathbed. Hilden excelled as a corporate lawyer at Williams and Connolly and did not do as well in her personal life.

Article Abstract:

Pres Bill Clinton's commutations of five federal prisoners' sentences are discussed, and are characterized as gender-based clemency as four of these commutations were of women prisoners. Clinton felt much more severe sentences had gone to these women than to their male partners in crime and that they had already served a disproportionate amount of time.

'Never again,' with an asterisk; Swiss Holocaust deal pays many forgotten victims, but not Poles

Article Abstract:

The almost approved settlement with the Swiss banks to pay $1.25 bil to non-Jewish Holocaust victims, including the disabled, Romani, Jehovah's Witnesses and gays is discussed.The settlement, unlike a provisional German one, would exclude those oppressed because of nationality or politics and this has caused controversy.
