Windows 95's new design elements are causing quite a stir in the Intel-centric PC industry, but Macintosh users are less impressed with the new features because they have been enjoying these all along. Long file names, icons, a trash can and built-in networking are among the Mac features now being touted by Windows 95 promoters. Despite all these new features, the Macintosh is still the better choice for law offices because the Mac is simply better for performing common tasks, such as information retrieval and graphics processing. Many legal applications are now being ported to the Mac platform and are available on CD-ROM, a device handled far more efficiently by Macs than Windows machines. Network installers know from experience that Mac networks are easier to set up and maintain than their Windows counterparts, providing yet another reason to choose Macintoshes for legal applications.

Connectix's $149 Virtual PC terminal emulation software provides an impressive, versatile approach to PC software emulation. Virtual PC imitates Pentium II computers with MMX and transforms PowerMacs into PCs that can run Windows 3.11, 95 and NT as well as DOS and OS/2. Virtual PC provides seamless access to floppy and IDE controllers by emulating both the processor and the Pentium PC hardware set. It also supports SoundBlaster, VGA displays, PC keyboards and mice and CD-ROM drives. Virtual PC is compatible with Word, WordPerfect, Microsoft Access, PowerPoint and legal-specific calendar control, case management and time and billing applications. Virtual PC provides a less expensive and easier-to-configure alternative to SoftWindows 4.0.
