Blast rips the legal world; he was daydreaming at a partners' meeting; suddenly the windows blew out

Article Abstract:

The bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah bldg in Oklahoma City affected many lawyers, but only a few were apparently killed by the blast or its effects. Three Housing and Urban Development department lawyers remained missing two days afterwards, along with two other local lawyers. More remarkable was how many escaped serious injury. Many gave blood and some assisted rescue efforts, while the Oklahoma Bar Assn offered to help the Federal Emergency Management Agency and to clamp down on any overzealous or unethical attorneys.

The earth breathes fire, scorches lawyers: a year after a gas main blast in Edison, N.J., officials examine charges of client solicitation

Article Abstract:

Lawyers who rushed to the scene of a 1994 gas-line explosion in Edison, NJ, now find themselves threatened with censure or disbarment. The NJ Office of Attorney Ethics accuses four of them of soliciting clients too distraught to make such a decision. Some of the lawyers say they intervened because the victims were indeed distraught, while others say the people they met were calm and sought help. The lawyers also say the gas-line company was far more aggressive in trying to pay people to forgo the right to a lawsuit.

Article Abstract:

Eleanor Breitel Alter and Frederick Miller have resigned from the ABA to protest its budget overhaul. The organization cut a fifth of the financing for the Center for Professional Responsibility, which sets nationwide disciplinary standards, and eliminated financing for a well-respected client protection committee. The organization claims it needs the cuts to survive. Alter is the chair of the Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection of New York and Miller was an early chair of the ABA's client protection committee.
