He can run, but his legal woes remain

Article Abstract:

The case of alleged war criminal John Demjanjuk has taken many twists and turns since the 1977 charge he lied on his immigration papers and concealed his service with the Nazi SS. He was eventually extradited to Israel, where he was convicted and sentenced to death in 1988 for being 'Ivan the Terrible,' the notorious death camp guard at the Treblinka concentration camp. When the Soviet Union collapsed, information that 'Ivan the Terrible' was really Ivan Marchenko started to filter out. The Israeli Supreme Court overturned Demjanjuk's conviction in July 1993. Demjanjuk has returned to the US, but his legal troubles are not yet over.

Browns case a lesson in NFL 'teamwork': under deal, Cleveland drops suit and still gets gridders. But other football teams also gear for move

Article Abstract:

Art Modell's decision to move his Cleveland Browns football team to Baltimore, Md, was approved by the NFL on Feb 9, 1996, following Cleveland's agreement to drop a lawsuit stopping the move in exchange for a new Browns team by 1999. The Browns name and colors stay in Cleveland, which will also receive approximately $48 million for a new facility. The city's suit had been based on its leases and subleases, which it contended bound the team to Cleveland until 1998. The Seattle Seahawks and several other NFL teams are considering similar moves.

In Bosnia, the fighting goes on, and so does legal education

Article Abstract:

Mark S Ellis and others in the American Bar Assn's outreach programs work with the University of Sarajevo Law School to reform the school's curriculum and teaching methods and support its survival. Ellis, executive director of the ABA's Central and East European Law Initiative, has visited the city three times this year. The ethnically diverse law school is the only one the ABA recognizes in Bosnia, though three single-ethnicity competitors have arisen. After fighting ends, trained administrators will be crucial.
