Bush v. Clinton; the candidates on legal issues

Article Abstract:

President George Bush and Governor Bill Clinton are interviewed on their attitudes to various legal issues. Bush stands by his record of seeking out the best qualified judicial nominees regardless of race or gender, questions the objectivity of the ABA in screening judicial nominees, wants more state and volunteer involvement in legal services to the poor and stricter laws dealing with repeat criminals. Clinton takes issue with Bush's politicizing the judicial appointments process and packing the courts with too many right-wing appointees and differs with Bush on most other issues.

A matter of forms: standard documents provide a legal foundation in construction matters

Article Abstract:

The construction industry has many standard legal forms covering most routine aspects of design, construction, and remodelling. The best known of these come from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), serving the industry in the same way as the Uniform Commercial Code facilitates the sale of goods. The Engineers Joint Contract Documents Committee puts out many competing forms, usually more protective of the owner than the AIA forms. These and others may be modified, and substantial legal interpretation is available.

The Beckwith strategy; mission to give legal help to military personnel continues after 50 years

Article Abstract:

The ABA Committee on National Defense, Created in 1940, spawned a military legal assistance program which has become entrenched during the last 50 years. Two laws enacted at the time of the committee's founding helped further ABA interest, the Selective Training and Service Act and the Soldiers' and Sailors' Civil Relief Act. Although no longer under the aegis of the ABA, the organization retains its interest in the program through the Standing Committee on Legal Assistance to Military Personnel.
