Business is booming: law firms profiting from good economy, efficient operation

Article Abstract:

Both large and small law firms are experiencing increased business because of the strong economy and because most firms are optimized for efficiency and technologically advanced. Securities, venture capital, corporate finance and public offerings are among the leading areas of law while bankruptcy and environmental law are declining. Hourly charges for experienced lawyers have increased from $184 in 1993 to $200 in 1996. Firms are using recruiting companies and paying bonuses for recommendations while starting salaries have risen to as much as $91,000.

Getting off the hook

Article Abstract:

Lawyers subjected to late-night telephone calls or other unexpected disturbances must respond carefully, though they can also take steps to prevent the problem. First one must decide whether an emergency is involved. Professional obligations remain important. Experts advise treating the call like one at the office, calming the caller down, and having a ready list of specialized practitioners who might be more appropriate. Answering services can handle many questions, and informed clients are less likely to call.

Post-law school job may be as paralegal: trend more pronounced on East and West coasts where work tough to find

Article Abstract:

The job market for lawyers is so tight that some lawyers are willing to take jobs as paralegals, especially in such markets as Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and New York. Statistics show that only 70% of 1993's approximately 35,000 law school graduates had obtained law-related jobs within six months of graduation. Opinions vary about the effect working as a paralegal can have on a legal career. Some feel it is professional suicide, while others think getting a foot in the door can lead to a job as a lawyer.
