Coming of age: Having forever changed the profession by their numbers and diversity, baby boomers can look to running their firms and even (gasp!) retirement

Article Abstract:

As the oldest members of the Baby Boom generation turn 50 in 1996 it becomes possible to examine their past and future contributions to legal practice and the law in society. Some observers say the group as a whole succumbed to fatalism, while others contend its idealism lives on. Certainly the large numbers of women and minorities among baby-boom lawyers shaped the culture of law firms and brought true diversity to a staid, monolithic profession. The next challenge for this group is to lead law firms into the 21st century.

Law's new entrepreneurs

Article Abstract:

There is a growing trend of female attorneys setting up their own firms. These women are entrepreneurs, not people moving to solo practice after becoming burned out in large firms. They are the legal profession's equivalent of the growing number of women-owned businesses. Sometimes these women build their client lists through the use of connections with other businesswomen. All of these women share a desire to shape their own destinies.

Widening the net

Article Abstract:

Some women attorneys have rebelled against a legal culture in which networking opportunities center on mens' activities by creating networks of their own. These groups have invited women in business and government for lunches and seminars. Several well-known firms have instituted womens' client development groups.
