Commercial vehicles: improving safety, cutting costs

Article Abstract:

UK commercial vehicle operators could reduce the number of road accidents by recruiting and training good drivers, curbing substance abuse, testing drivers' knowledge, offering safety incentives, and properly maintaining vehicles. Vehicle safety and accident reduction are cost-effective ways to protect employees, increase profitability, avoid insurance premium increases, and prevent damage to a company's image. A vehicle accident database is useful for monitoring incidents involving commercial vehicles such as company cars and large goods vehicles.

A survey of 18 UK employers concluded that prevention of commercial vehicle accidents is a way to save a substantial amount of money for the businesses involved. A proactive approach that includes monitoring drivers and examining accident locations is recommended by the survey. The survey focused on factors such as the use of temporary agency drivers, insurance, driver age, accident rates, and severity, location and type of accidents. Accident reduction procedures were already in use at many of the employers surveyed.
