Commericalizing air traffic control

Article Abstract:

The country's air traffic control system or ATC, which is operated by the Federal Aviation Administration, is in dire need of restructuring. The system is being hampered on obsolete and unreliable equipment such as mainframes and radar over three decades old. The system is beset by fundamental problems such as inefficient procurement systems, mismanagement, limited budget, and conflict of interest. The Canadian government, however, has been able to introduce reforms in its ATC system by permitting airline firms and airports to manage the air traffic themselves, thereby saving on costs.

Airline deregulation: the unfinished revolution

Article Abstract:

Deregulation has benefited the airline-riding public primarily in terms of lower airfares but more deregulation is still possible in the industry. The direction that deregulation should take is in freeing government-owned support infrastructure on which airlines depend. Thus, agencies such as the Air Traffic Conference should be run in a business-like manner to benefit the airlines. Other areas that would benefit from more deregulation include airports, runways and landing equipment.
