Computers and safety: looking ahead

Article Abstract:

Observers of computers' effect on industry note many legal and social effects in Britain at the end of 1997, including dealing with the potential failure of older computers unable to cope with dates from the year 2000, and the possible increase of case law where computer failure has caused an industrial accident. Technology could provide great benefits by increasing video conferencing, by enforcement authorities increasing their use to implement enforcement standards, and by increasing use in the related areas of safety, security, and insurance.

Auditing

Article Abstract:

Safety managers can use software to develop, implement, and evaluate safety policies. A commercial audit package can provide managers with a ready-made system, although safety question sets may have to be modified. Software can help managers quickly tabulate interview responses and compare new and older data. Verification of audits, performance, cost factors, safety standards, and similar factors can also be analyzed.
