Crime and justice in England and Wales, 1981-1999

Article Abstract:

Important trends in crime and justice in England and Wales between 1981 and 1991 is outlined and six major offenses were studied such as residential burglary, motor vehicle theft, robbery, serious assault, rape and homicide. Serious property crimes in England and Wales increased from 1981 to 1993 and then decreased, while serious nonlethal violence increased between 1981-1999. It is believed that increases in unemployment might have caused increases in property crime rates and increases in prosperity might have caused increases in nonlethal violence.

Article Abstract:

A study was presented in which the criminal justice system responses to six kinds of crime namely homicide, rape and robbery, assault and motor vehicle theft is presented and the measures, which averaged across various countries, were examined to determine how the different crime types are treated. This analysis allows characterizing the measure of punitiveness by crime type and by country and it also provides an opportunity to explore explanations of national differences.
