Cure for a system in chaos

Article Abstract:

The problems of the legal system include court congestion and delay, unequal access to and inadequate funding for the courts and racism within the legal profession. Possible solutions include a greater emphasis on public service at the law school level, making the legal system more accessible by writing documents in plain English, new ways for selecting judges leading to higher quality and more diversity, replacing lawyers with neighborhood paralegals in most civil disputes, and requiring legal impact statements for new laws under consideration.

The U.S. jury system is failing

Article Abstract:

The jury system is more the instrument of the wealthy and corporations than the average person. Several steps can be taken to remedy this situation. Note-taking should be permitted and transcripts of testimony made available to juries. Written copies of the judge's instructions should be issued. The judge should use more frequently special verdicts, applying the law to the jury's findings of fact. In certain cases, juries can be selected from experts familiar with the facts at issue rather than the general public.

Jury system ain't broke, so leave it

Article Abstract:

Jurors, attorneys and judges all agree that the jury system is the best method for administering justice in civil cases. The pressure to change comes from insurance companies that are attempting to portray the jury system as out of control. Studies in various disciplines over the last 25 years have validated the worth of juries. Some reforms would be beneficial, but they focus on the administration of juries rather than their elimination.
