Dragging lawyers into the '90s

Article Abstract:

Law librarians can help make their firms be more profitable and competitive by advising attorneys on new technologies and helping to implement their use. Librarians frequently manage work product databases, and these can help an attorney to avoid doing the same work twice when clients with similar issues seek help. Using a work product database will help the firm to know that the advice they provide is high-quality and consistent. Electronic technology also provides new and more efficient ways of communicating, including electronic mail and the transmission of documents in electronic text form.

The virtual library looms; stacks of books may be a thing of the past. But skeptics still exist

Article Abstract:

Technology advances make it possible to envision electronic law libraries, although skeptics think some will always feel more at home with books. Electronic mail is the technological advance lawyers have grown most accustomed to, with some routinely asking colleagues legal questions via this medium. Electronic law libraries, also growing in popularity, make it possible for multiple users to access a large volume of legal information at the same time. Some firms have their own work product data bases. More law firms are realizing that automation gives them a competitive edge.

Shortcuts for better research

Article Abstract:

Online legal searching is more efficient than manual searching. An online search can generate more data in less time than a manual search. Decisions that are not in print yet, or are not going to print, can be found with online searching. Specialized searches for particular quotes, specific types of cases, or opinions of specific judges can be found easily online. Computer-assisted research also can be used for marketing and locating prospective clients and witnesses.
