Article Abstract:
The draft treaty agreed at the European Union summit in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in Jun 1997 boosted the environmental protection provisions of the European Union treaties. Environmental issues were also discussed at the G8 summit in Denver, CO, and at the Earth II summit in New York, NY. In other developments with environmental significance, the European Commission has adopted a communication which details options for energy policy if greenhouse gas emission reduction targets are to be met. The energy council has invited the Commission to develop a policy for the promotion of renewable energy.
