Will Court win spur GOP backlash? A New York judge says total ban on legal services' class actions is unconstitutional

Article Abstract:

Legal Services Corp (LSC) proponents fear that a New York Supreme Court ruling that federal limits on class actions for the poor are unconstitutional may spur Republicans to renew their efforts to abolish the Legal Services Corp. Legislation on limits was passed in 1996 and barred LSC grantees from the use of federal or private funds to fund class action litigation. Legal Services attorneys in the field hailed the ruling a victory.

Low-bid contracts divide public defenders; old-line legal aid lawyers say defendants will suffer; others say things are fine

Article Abstract:

Over half of the states have initiatives pending to fund indigent defense through competitive bidding for low-bid contracts, and legal aid lawyers maintain that the practice would threaten indigent defendants' constitutional right to counsel. Decreased funding, limits on appeals and stricter sentencing laws do not help the cause of the criminal without means either.
