GOP bill would strew litigators; Justice Dept. says House idea could hamper cases

Article Abstract:

Present and former Justice Dept officials oppose an effort by Republicans in the House to move some 200 lawyers' positions from Justice to US Attorneys' offices. The House appropriations bill allocates $25 million to the 94 US Attorneys' offices, $2.5 million more than Justice gets for those posts, but backers say the change would reduce travel and related costs. Opponents of the measure say it would lead to inconsistencies in interpretation of the tax and environmental laws involved. Justice would still make enforcement decisions.

TV deregulation is driving the deals; media moguls buy networks to control new shows, reruns

Article Abstract:

Recent mergers of giants in the communications industry reflect changing rules at the Federal Communications Commission and anticipated legislative deregulation. Westinghouse's open acquisition of CBS for $5.4 billion and Walt Disney's surprise purchase of Capital Cities/ABC were made possible by the effective demise of the FCC's so-called financial/syndication, or fin-syn, rule. That rule restricted network ownership of television programming, and its decline has prompted program creators to establish new networks.

Warning: Hot Coale

Article Abstract:

Plaintiffs' mass disaster lawyer John P. Coale is an alleged ambulance chaser with a flamboyant style who has had conflicts with the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He claims that his direct solicitations of aviation accident clients were responsible for the lowering of contingency fee rates, a claim which has been disputed by other lawyers. Greta C. Van Susteren, his wife and law partner, was a highly respected criminal defense attorney before teaming up with her husband.
