Kelly describes the law department as centralized by giving day-to-day responses in decentralized ways. Kelly developed a company global business standards program and regards as the company's major deal its acquisition of the French meat business Aost.

Stephen T. Braun, the senior vice pres and general counsel of the Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp, heads a legal department of 40 attorneys, mainly in the Nashville headquarters. The department plans on staying mainly centralized. Actual litigation is the main activity handled by outside counsel, although monitoring by inside personnel will be active. Columbia has acquired many hospitals in the 1990s and much of the legal work has been connected with that.
