Green herrings: NAFTA and the environment

Article Abstract:

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is especially popular in Mexico, but has been attacked in the United States on environmental grounds. This is misjudged, since the economic advantages for Mexico will provide the country with an economic incentive to improve its performance on environmental issues. Ironically, too much emphasis on environmental issues by the United States could take away this incentive, and thus defeat the object of the exercise, through creating environmental trade barriers. President Clinton is thus misguided when he calls for increased regulation to protect the environment to be added to the trade agreement.

The paradox of Machiavellianism: Machiavellianism may make for productive sales but poor management reviews

Article Abstract:

Machiavellianism (MACH) tend to have a positive effect on sales performance but negative effect on overall managerial ratings. Employees who possess high Machiavellian traits are those who sell high levels of merchandise or service. However, such employees tend to have lower overall managerial ratings than those who sell less. MACH's two opposing effects illustrate the existence of personality friction between high Mach sales personnel and managers.
