Groups criticize bar on mental histories

Article Abstract:

The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of handicap, and public interest lawyers' are citing it in their objections to state bar examiners' queries about applicants' mental health histories. The Florida Bar's question is phrased in especially broad terms, wanting to know if an applicant has ever received counseling for a nervous or mental disorder. The Florida Board of Bar Examiners and the ACLU disagree as to whether or not this questioning is too intrusive.

Miami police trial is hot potato

Article Abstract:

The second manslaughter trial of suspended Miami policeman William Lozano for the shooting of a black motorcyclist and passenger is having trouble finding a proper venue in Florida. Defense attorneys maintain that Tallahassee, the current venue, has too high a proportion of blacks in the jury pool for Lozano to receive a fair trial. Observers feel an acquittal is likely this time since the defense has more practice and witnesses' memories of the shootings have begun to fade after four years.

Fla. lawyers help track Nazi atrocities

Article Abstract:

The Florida firm of Greenberg, Traurig, Hoffman, Lipoff, Rosen and Quentel has helped marshal evidence for a British trial regarding a documentary on Nazi atrocities. The case is a libel suit filed by Antony Gecas against Scottish Television for a documentary connecting him to World War II atrocities. The Florida firm was retained by Scottish Television as British libel law puts the burden of proof on defendants to show that their claims are "substantially true."
