Health insurance purchasing cooperatives: how does your cooperative grow?

Article Abstract:

Many design factors affect the success of health insurance purchasing cooperatives (HIPCs), though none alone are essential. Such cooperatives seek to give small employers better bargaining power with health marketing organizations and similar bodies. Congress seemed skeptical about HIPCs when it contemplated universal health coverage, but states have proven more amenable, with Florida and California having the longest-established groups. HIPCs are most successful when general environmental conditions are a design factor.

National health insurance - dead or alive?

Article Abstract:

National health insurance is unlikely in the near future but many of the issues raised recently in national debate are likely fodder for legislative and workplace changes. Lawmakers will probably try to make employer-provided medical coverage more portable, and amend ERISA to permit more state-level experimentation. Benefits aimed at families and children could proliferate, and those for elderly parents and adoption assistance are also probable.
