Industrial restructuring: implications for collective bargaining

Article Abstract:

Corporate restructuring has been a leading cause of the labor movement's decline and is linked to lower employment, a shift from goods to service employment and lower hourly and annual payroll. Smaller bargaining groups caused by lower employment per establishment have reduced the influence of labor unions while increasing the costs per person of organizing. Services industries are also harder to organize because they are not the labor movement's traditional forum. Unions most adapt their collective bargaining and organizing strategies to the new labor market.
