Public sector asphxiation: a time for action in collective bargaining

Article Abstract:

The 'evangelical fiscalism' present today in educational institutions results from management's instilling in employees a fear based on fiscal constraint. Management is left in control and most employers try to roll back wages, rescind benefits and even eliminate the idea of tenure and lifelong work. This has been especially prominent in universities where the issue of tenure remains a sensitive topic.Public sector educators should take collective action and never acquiesce to management's unreasonable demands.

Closing the door on closed-shop agreements: labor law, trade unionism, and the right to freedom of assembly and freedom of association under the European Convention on Human Rights

Article Abstract:

A closed-shop policy mandating union membership in industries such as British Rail prevailed in the United Kingdom from the 1970s until 1981. In that year the European Court of Human Rights ruled the closed-shop to be a violation of free assembly and free association rights. Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government welcomed the ruling and followed it up by breaking the power of the British unions.
