Helping lawyers cope with new legal market

Article Abstract:

The American Bar Assn's Law Practice Management Section seeks to help lawyers navigate the changing face of legal practice as massive forces create a more pro-client environment. Lawyers no longer have market power, and must partner with other experts to create a team rendering the best legal services to clients. The section has launched three new task forces: Electronic Media Publishing, led by Phil J. Shuey; Non-Lawyer Practice, led by Jim Dimitriou; and Preventive Law, led by Thomas H. Gonser.

Helping lawyers resolve complex merger issues

Article Abstract:

Antitrust laws and their relationship with intellectual property laws play a major role in transforming the US economy. Health care and high technology are now key areas of antitrust, and the Dept of Justice and Federal Trade Commission have issued joint guidelines on encouraging competition to provide the best and most cost-efficient health care possible. Antitrust and intellectual property laws function in seemingly opposite fashions, creating special tensions and demanding special evaluation.

Helping to protect rights in new technologies

Article Abstract:

The American Bar Assn's Intellectual Property (IP) Law Section has a long and distinguished tradition of fostering IP rights worldwide. It now supports converting the US Patent and Trademark Office into a government corporation, as well as a 20-year patent term and uniform laws on the right of publicity. It opposes excluding medical techniques from patent protection, and is fighting against dilution of IP rights.
