INTA's model guidelines shape trademark laws; the guidelines are intended to serve as a standard for new laws in developing countries

Article Abstract:

The International Trademark Assn started its Model Law Guidelines project in 1994 to help ensure the consistency of the frequent help it must provide in shaping trademark laws worldwide. The guidelines cover 13 areas including trademark use requirements, the incontestability of trademark registrations, and well-known marks. The guidelines advocate not requiring evidence that a trademark has been actually used at the time an application for registration is made. Guidelines for positions on infringement are also given.

INTA keeps focus on Internet, global issues; association evaluated ICANN's new gTLD, made inroads in China and surveyed foreign law

Article Abstract:

The activities of the International Trademark Association in 2000 and early 2001 in monitoring the international use of trademarks are discussed. US accession to the Madrid Protocol has been one of the top INTA legislative priorities. A study of possible EU expansion of its trademark system has also been performed.

The calendar of events at the 122d annual meeting of the International Trademark Association (INTA) to be held in mid-2000 is given. The growth of electronic commerce has greatly affected trademarks, and the INTA has worked to protect international trademark rights.
