Indiana creates program to steer minority students to the bench

Article Abstract:

The Indiana Court of Appeals created a program to make minority law students more aware of the possibility of judicial positions both as law clerks and as judges. The eight-week summer program involved hiring five minority law students to perform clerking duties and participate in field trips to prisons, criminal courts and workers' compensation hearings. Student responses were positive and the program is likely to encourage more diversity in the judicial workplace.

Calif. judges launch public-image campaign; to get more funding, better pay, judges prepare to give speeches, open a Web page

Article Abstract:

California judges are undertaking efforts to improve how they are perceived by the public. Although usually conservative in approach, the judges are planning to launch a Web page to assist users with some of the more mundane court procedures such as those required to use small claims and traffic courts. The judges may be one of the last of modern society's powerful organizations to acknowledge the necessity of public relations efforts.

On accessible, autonomous courts: president ends term with call for resistance to legal services cuts and to attacks on judiciary

Article Abstract:

The ABA must defend judges and the judicial system against ongoing attacks. Similarly, the Legal Services Corp's funding must not be cut. These attacks on the system's integrity and funding are diminishing the public's right to equal access and must be countered by the legal community. In particular, the ABA must stop congressional attempts to block the confirmation of federal judges.
