Introduction to the problem

Article Abstract:

Environmental problems are linked with other economic and social problems in such a way that they cannot be solved in isolation. Some problems are global and the solutions are essential for survival, such as population control. Two mistaken approaches to problems are to turn pollution control into a new industry, rather than elimination at the source, and turning regulatory agencies over to their industries, such as happened with the Atomic Energy Commission and its promotion of nuclear power plants.

The role of the Environmental Protection Agency

Article Abstract:

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was founded to develop knowledge of problems and apply solutions to those ecological problems. Technological assessment and forecasting were necessary starting activities for the EPA due to a gap in pollution control technology. The EPA had the National Environmental Policy Act and Clean Air Act Amendments of 1970 for legal mandates, and was intended to work with the Council on Environmental Quality and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Urgently needed: a nationwide appraisal of the growth problem

Article Abstract:

Economic growth must be considered within the context of ecological limits. The American Dream of unlimited economic growth has run afoul of limits of natural resources, pollution, food shortages and social decay. Technology will not solve the problems except in the short term. Americans should form survival congresses to discuss the new direction society should take to maintain natural harmony.
