Juries revalue wrongful deaths; lawyers say panels are rendering larger damage verdicts to survivors

Article Abstract:

Several new trends have become apparent in wrongful death verdicts, say experts. These include awarding as much or more for wrongful death as for severe injury, and higher awards for the deaths of children and those with high expected lifetime earnings. Some plaintiffs' attorneys consider higher awards a statistical anomaly, and say jurors are reluctant to pay 'blood money' that will not bring the victim back. Sometimes egregious wrongdoing can influence the verdict, and many awards are effectively symbolic.
