Stereotyping dress codes in tatters; new California statute says that businesses may not keep women from wearing trousers to work

Article Abstract:

Employers should make sure their dress and grooming codes are based on what is necessary to do a job rather than on stereotypes about how the sexes should look. If case law is any guide, codes based on demeaning stereotypes would not withstand Title VII scrutiny. A California law in this area will take effect on Jan 1, 1995, forbidding dress codes which allow men but not women to wear pants.

1990 statute looks to foreign investors

Article Abstract:

The Immigration Act of 1990 sets aside 10,000 visas above quota limitations for foreign investors and their families. Immigrating entrepreneurs must invest at least $1 million; however, a lower figure is allowed for those investing in economically depressed areas. Initial response has been disappointing, but some administrative problems have slowed the application process.
