Kirkholt revisited: some reflections on the transferability of crime prevention initiatives

Article Abstract:

Attempts to recreate the widely hailed Kirkholt Burglary Prevention Project to another area of the UK, Tenmouth, make evident some shortcomings in the evaluation and implementation strategies of crime prevention programs. The dominant approach, which emphasizes the tangible and an 'implant' approach for such short-term projects, fails to recognize differences between communities and social structures. By simply dumping already established programs onto to new localities, such an approach also places an undue burden on a community that is only assumed to exist, thereby lessening state responsibility and responsiveness.

Less crime in the cities through heroin prescription? Preliminary results from the evaluation of the Swiss heroin prescription projects

Article Abstract:

The Swiss heroin prescription projects instituted due to the country's serious drug problem of the 1980s and early 1990s decreases delinquency but it is not yet evident if the lower crime rate among participants translates to lower urban crime. More than half the addicts in the program used to try to obtain additional cash through the resale of drugs and reducing drug traffic would be a significant result in the war on drugs.
