Protesters get legal help in L.A.; a lawyers 'collective' has been working since April

The Work of the Midnight Special Law Collective in preparation for defending protestors at the Democratic National Convention for 2000 is described. California attorney Katya Komisarek heads the team and acquired experience defending anti-free-trade protestors at Seattle's World Trade Organization meeting the same year.

Defects cases rise as houses tumble; natural disasters put owners, builders and insurers at odds

Article Abstract:

California's housing explosion of the 1980s and the state's penchant for natural disasters have given rise to two kinds of construction defect cases, those against insurance companies and secondary ones against the companies making the repairs. The state's building industry and the consumer attorneys are at war with each other, with the former claiming that multifamily housing is expensive and scarce because of the excessive awards going to plaintiffs' attorneys.
