Lawyers in the storm; ABA volunteers offer free advice to hurricane victims

Article Abstract:

Many Florida lawyers volunteered time at various disaster assistance centers to answer legal questions after Hurricane Andrew. The ABA's Young Lawyers Div has a contract with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to staff federal disaster assistance centers with pro bono legal help. The volunteer lawyers are not allowed to take on any hurricane-related cases for money and must either tell victims in need of more legal assistance how to look for a lawyer or accept the case pro bono.

Ballad of Billy the Plaintiff; Joel lawsuit claims lawyers curried favor with his manager, breached duty

Article Abstract:

Entertainer Billy Joel has sued his former law firm Grubman, Indursky, Schindler and Goldstein for fraud and breach of contract for dealings with his former manager Frank Weber including the alleged payment of kickbacks and failure to investigate Weber's management of Joel's finances. The firm asserts that it advised Joel only on his music contracts, not personal finances. Experts say disputes between entertainers and their lawyers often concern alleged mismanagement of funds.

How presentation changed a case; jury research tells lawyers at ABA mock trial to emphasize an affair, lost money

Article Abstract:

Jury research is a new service being offered to law firms and companies involved include Jury Analysts Inc, Litigation Sciences Inc, Starr and Associates, the Jury Research Institute and the National Jury Project. The ABA's Section of Litigation and Division for Professional Education sponsored a program on the subject, including a mock trial, in mid-1992. Attorneys present learned that the manner in which they present a case influences how the jury sees it.
