Legal pilot weathers storms, flies high

Article Abstract:

Gordon M Steenland, the executive vice-president-alliances, general counsel and secretary of Northwest Airlines Corp, devotes an estimated 20% of his time to legal matters, 25% to labor activities and another 25% to alliance issues. Work with the chief executive officer and the board of directors takes up the rest of Sttenland's time. One of his major feats was helping with company restructuring during the airline depression years of the early 1990s and helping to take the company public in 1994.

Clorox top lawyer awash with work

Peter D Bewley, the senior vice pres, general counsel and secretary of the Clorox Co., the maker of laundry additives as well as other household and auto care products, devotes 80% of his time to matters of most concern to the chairman, most recently board of directors governance and the acquisition of First Brands.Clorox' acquisition of First Brands, a Connecticut maker of similar products, boosted the company's global sales to nearly $4 bil and the number of employees to more than 11,000.

A curator's tale of sex, art, fakes; an expert in drawings takes a dream Getty Museum job, but then things go wrong

Article Abstract:

The story of the misadventures suffered by art historian Nicholas Turner in his new job at the J. Paul Getty Museum, where he had hoped for a surfeit of money to buy art and time for research. The authenticity of many of the Getty's drawings almost immediately aroused Turner's suspicion, but the museum chose not to act on his fears and his working relationship went bad.
