Locking horns for his alma mater

Article Abstract:

Ray Farabee, the general counsel for the University of Texas, an associate general counsel, one responsible for intellectual property, one for medical liability, one for real estate, environmental law and taxation, one for claims and bankruptcy and one for general law. Farabee uses various firms as primary outside counsel. His department spends about $5 mil annually on medical liability defense, about $2 mil on other outside counsel, and about $2.5 mil for work done by the Texas attorney general's office, and an unspecified amount for intellectual property due to foreign patent registration. Hopwood, an affirmative action ruling, was the landmark case.

Joan Krey, the senior vice pres, general counsel and secretary of Saks Holding Inc, the holding company of Saks Fifth Avenue, 35 "Off Fifth" outlet stores and the Folio catalog business, believes in a small in-house legal staff with just an assistant general counsel and an experienced paralegal. As much work as possible, including the advertising review, trademark decisions and contracts are handled in-house. Krey is also the ethics officer of the company and controls costs by doing a great deal of work on the telephone.

Silicone suits and bankruptcy woes

Article Abstract:

James R. Jenkins, the vice pres, secretary and general counsel of Dow Corning Corp, heads a department of 41 attorneys out of a total staff of 108. Most matters, including those regarding litigation, employment, international law, contract and intellectual property are handled in-house. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1995 after attempts to reach a global settlement of claims against it in the silicone breast implant litigation failed.
