Lost in the myths of crime: the use of penal custody for male juveniles, 1969 to 1993

Article Abstract:

Increases in penal custody for male juvenile offenders between 1969 and 1993 can be largely attributed to decreases in social services and the politicization of criminal issues as government officials exploited national fears of crime and criminals. Evidence suggests that long term incarceration and more severe punishments of male youths are doing nothing to deter criminal activity and only contribute to prison overcrowding. Issues of criminal justice should be considered a social crisis rather than a popular tool of politicians.
