Users' rights and the probation service: some opportunities and obstacles

Article Abstract:

The adoption of a 'users' rights' approach to probation services, with those on probation being the users, could promote more social responsibility in parolees. Such an approach offers users a chance to be treated more equitably and serves as a balance to the managerial structure of most parole services. Recommendations include allowing more say from the user when the parole officer seeks information from employers and others, increased opportunity for the user to contribute in evaluations, less written reporting on users, better training for parole managers and the use of an independant complaint system.

The probation career of Al Truism

Article Abstract:

Bill McWilliams wrote four articles on probation history, and his ideas about the probation officer's moral responsibility deserve consideration. Many factors known to lead to reconviction are understood, but statistical studies of reconviction rates neglect the protective affect of custody. Probation officers should know the history of their profession in order to understand their part in the criminal justice system.

Thinking about the future of probation inspection

Article Abstract:

The Chief Inspector of probation - England and Wales (2004) states that the functions of inspectorates should be symbiotically related to the characteristics of the services they inspect. The role of an inspectorate is basically affected by the managerial capacity of the services being inspected.
