Managing branch offices requires creative effort

Article Abstract:

Interoffice integration was considered the greatest challenge in managing legal branch offices by 12 managing partners with experience in regional office management. Strategies used include structuring the accounting and compensation systems to promote integration, encouraging regular communication among offices with electronic mail and meetings, spreading leadership across offices and using a practice group structure that cuts across offices. All managers agreed that the terms 'branch' and 'home' offices should be avoided.

Case study shows how firm can conquer crisis

Article Abstract:

A law firm managed by partner consensus must take detailed steps when differing personalities and management styles threaten its survival. A useful first step is retaining a management consultant to survey all attorneys on all aspects of the firm's management and needs for the future. This may result in useful suggestions such as management committees with membership from all levels of the firm and more systematic, fairer methods of determining attorney compensation. The process is illustrated with a fictional case study.
