Mode of trial and the influence of local justice

Article Abstract:

A research study revealed significant variations in the committal rates of three magistrates' courts, wherein individual court cultures that evolved as a consequence of an implicit belief in the concept of local justice provided the basis for these differences. The concept of local justice is related to the local values and conditions and is important for any analysis of court culture.

Evaluation of a UK police domestic violence unit using repeat victimization as a performance indicator

Article Abstract:

A special unit of the police force was established in England to deal with domestic violence, and a number of indicators set up to measure the unit's effectiveness in reducing repeat calls as a percentage of their total calls. Statistics indicate these police units were effective in preventing crime, but measuring repeat calls to the same location is problematic.

Article Abstract:

The London Metropolitan Police Service changed its procedure and style of handling rape cases in response to public criticism in the 1980s. Data collected from a group of women who reported rape from 1993 to 1995 suggests that more changes could be made to improve the handling of rape cases in the future.
