Article Abstract:

Guidelines for legal administrators to help associates become involved in business development are discussed. Reminders of the importance of networking, teaching the skill of describing and praising the expertise of the firm to possible clients is key and knowledge of what the firm's ideal client are helpful.

Lawyers and firms reap benefits, too; pro bono work helps attorneys garner recognition, experience as well as find fulfillment

Article Abstract:

Pro bono work offers many tangible, business-related benefits to law firms and individual lawyers, in addition to the important principles involved. Through pro bono, younger lawyers can more quickly gain professional development, using some skills years earlier than they could in commercial practice and benefitting from excellent free training. More experienced attorneys enjoy the variety and intellectual stimulation. Firms find pro bono helps them in recruiting, maintaining morale, and community stature.

From plebe to general: planning the campaign; it's important to develop a leadership mindset early

Article Abstract:

Law firm associates should try from the outset of their working lives to develop the complete set of skills for operating independently, and midlevel associates should take charge of their own training and career development. Senior lawyers cannot possibly know their needs and desires as well as they themselves do. Career advancement methods include training junior lawyers, talking with peers and daring to ask for advice, and developing a brief 'tag' line or self-description when meeting another lawyer. Persistence is the key to career development.
