Not enough hours; making the most of the time we have

Article Abstract:

The keys to effective time management are minimizing interruptions and thus enabling oneself to focus, making lists and prioritizing the items on them, and minimizing paper shuffling by not handling a document more than once. Interruptions can be minimized by scheduling uninterrupted time each day and not returning phone calls until this time is over. One should stay with the top-priority task on a list until it is done or is no longer the top priority. Documents can be handled just once by avoiding the trap of looking at everything before deciding what to do with anything.

Accentuate the positive; visualizing success helps in planning for a satisfying future

Article Abstract:

Lawyers can plan for successful futures by giving up the idea that they can excel at all things. They should concentrate on those areas of the law and types of work at which they feel most proficient and gradually rid their practice of other areas. Recognizing what they do best will help them develop a clear idea of their practice's objectives which they can proceed to live by.

The secret of success; need balanced lives, not necessarily more billable hours

Article Abstract:

Attorneys need to achieve a balance between their professional and personal lives so that the pressures of both cannot adversely impact their physical and emotional health and professional conduct. Much of law firm management values long hours unduly and this value system gets passed on from one generation of attorneys to the next.
